Your Wedding Day Is NOT the Most Important Day of Your Life

Dear You,

Yes, yes, yes — you. Bride-to-be. Single girl who may not be walking down the aisle anytime soon but does spend a lot of quality time pinning things on Pinterest.

I’m here to tell you that your future wedding day is not the most important day of your life. I see those eyes rolling. I hear you whispering something under your breath. Sorry if that statement was a slap in the face, but it is the truth.

Lots of people have tried hard to convince you otherwise — for example: wedding magazines, romantic comedies, even marketing campaigns that try to get you to whip out your wallet and spend thousands of dollars on a dress that you will only wear once for eight hours and a wedding cake that you may never get to taste because you will be too busy dancing the entire night.

You will have many important days in your life and usually those days will be when you make a giant decision about something. Perhaps the day you sent in your acceptance letter to the college of your dreams or even the moment someone stood in front of you and asked if you would spend the rest of your life with them. Those are important moments. Those are important days.

Your wedding? It’s just a celebration. It’s a day that lets you throw your hands up in the air and celebrate that important day in your life and that important decision that you made when you said yes to the person you are marrying, not to the dress you will be wearing on that day.

Sure, it seems important because rarely do you have the chance to dance, laugh, and eat in a room filled with every single friend and family member you have. Of course, it seems important because it is probably the most expensive party you will ever throw for yourself in this lifetime. The amount of stress and pressure you feel in the days leading up to your wedding make it feel important, too. You convince yourself that if everything doesn’t go perfectly that the day will be ruined.

Your wedding will not be ruined if things don’t go perfectly. In fact, if and when they don’t, you will realize that your wedding day isn’t as important as you imagined. It’s just a day — a special one for sure, but it is a day when you should enjoy yourself and the love that surrounds you for eight hours, knowing that that love is always there anyway.

The important thing to remember is that you had so many other important days in your life so far that have led to a wedding day. That is the truth and nothing but the truth.
