5 REASONS THE FEMALE CONDOM IS YOUR NEW BEST FRIEND (SERIOUSLY!)

5 REASONS THE FEMALE CONDOM IS YOUR NEW BEST FRIEND (SERIOUSLY!)

It’s surprisingly AWESOME!

Traditional condoms have been a birth control cultural mainstay for about 400 years. Old habits die hard, I guess (pun intended).

But, the female condom, which arrived on the scene 20 years ago, doesn’t get as much press. Maybe that’s because female condoms represent yet another form of contraception that puts the onus right back on the woman (and as women, I know I, for one, resist that).

But, I think it’s time to reconsider the female condom as a friend (not a foe), especially if you care about your own pleasure and your hormones.

I admit, I’m a bit of a purist when it comes to women and hormones — Leave mine alone!

I (like many young women) took oral contraceptives in my early 20’s. And, I have to tell you … I was not a fan (and neither was my body). Call me crazy but I prefer methods that help my body find its own way.

But, at the same time, I’m also not a big fan of male condoms. Latex isn’t particularly warm and fuzzy. But I know it’s the only thing that helps prevents STDs.

So that’s when I became a late discoverer of the perks of the female condom. Here are 5 reasons why I love and think you will too:

1. It keeps you super safe.

The female condom has a 95 percent protection rate when used correctly. That’s because it’s essentially a pouch that you insert into your vagina that captures semen, thereby preventing pregnancy while also providing protection against STDs. I know it might sound weird to put a pouch inside your vagina, but I’m telling you — it works!

2. It doesn’t kill the sexy mood.

We’ve all had those awkward moments when things get hot and heavy and your guy then has to stop to 1. find a condom 2. open the condom 3. put the condom on (correctly!). It’s a bit of a mood killer. With the female condom, you can put it on before having sex, making it far more convenient than a regular condom.

3. It’s far more pleasurable than a male condom.

When has a condom ever made sex feel better for a man or a woman? Probably never. The ring at the top of it has a rather nice way of rubbing up against your clitoris. Definitely a plus.

Also, the female condom is made of a material that is softer and strangely warmer than the usual latex, so you retain more sensation during intercourse … a bonus for him and for you.

4. No erection needed.

OK, bear with me … I’m just being practical here. There are times when a guy loses his erection (some men complain that male condoms make it challenging to stay hard), and then you have to start over.

Not an issue with the female condom (they really need a better name for it, don’t you think?), you can keep on keeping on as the opportunity allows for its use again!

5. It’s lube friendly.

The female condom is not made of latex (a bonus for those with a latex allergy), so you can use both oil and water-based lubes. It’s made from nitrile, a synthetic rubber that is puncture resistant, highly sensitive and actually feels pretty good.

While I know that it’s hard to teach an old dog new tricks, I’m encouraging you to give female condoms a try.

Not just once, but two or three times! (It can take more than one try to get the hang of them). You (and he) may find that you truly like them, and who doesn’t like more options for making sex safer and more enjoyable?
