Record Breaker: Rooney Becomes England’s Highest Goalscorer As England Beat Switzerland
Wayne Rooney has finally written his name in the history books, as he became England’s highest scoring senior player of all time in the 2-0 win over Switzerland.
Wayne Rooney who equaled Sir Bobby Charlton’s record with a penalty against San Marino a few days ago, struck another penalty to break the record today and stand alone atop the scoring mounting for the three lions. the penalty by Rooney was the second goal of the game after Harry Kane had opened the scoring in the 67th minute after Switzerland had done a good job holding the English back for the entire first half. Kane had only been on the pitch for seven minutes when the ball came to his feet and he sliced a shot past the Swiss goalkeeper into the back of the net to finally break the deadlock. In the 87th minute, Rooney got his moment after Xhaka brought down Raheem Sterling in the box. The wembley stadium exploded with excitement as Rooney stepped up to take the penalty. Though the Swiss goalkeeper got a touch to the ball, the power of the shot from Rooney was too much and the Manchester United man went wild with emotion as he had finally broken the record.
Wayne Rooney has had his doubters this season especially after the loss to Swansea by Manchester United where he missed two sitters but Rooney has answered his critics where it matters most, in an England jersey, breaking a record that Shearer, Fowler and Owen before him could not break. Rooney still has a chance to score more goals as he is just 29 years old.
