Marco Verratti insists not even Lionel Messi has ever put in as good a performance as Isco did for Spain on Saturday at the Bernabeu.

Spain defeated Italy 3-0 in the World Cup qualifying fixture, with Isco dominating proceedings and toying with Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Verratti.

At one point in the second period, the Italian star was left red-faced after he was cheekily nutmegged by Isco, which got everyone talking.

And on Sunday morning, Spanish and Italian papers sang the praises of the Real Madrid playmaker, with Marca leading with the headline: ‘Isco, what a bully!’

Following the match at the home of Madrid, Verratti, who was a major target for Barcelona in the summer, said he was left stunned by Isco’s dazzling display.

‘I suffered a lot against Isco’, Verratti said after the final whistle on Saturday night.

‘I was taken aback by his performance. Not even Messi has come close to that level. When I saw his nutmeg, I felt like standing up and applauding too.’

Saturday’s defeat has left Italy three points behind Spain with just three matches left in their World Cup qualification group.

Italy will be desperate to bounce back when they face Israel at home on Tuesday night.
