Pic shows: Sandeep's dead body A young man in India who was presumed to have died after being bitten by a snake, rose up from the funeral pyre as the moment it caught fire. The 23-year-old man only known by his first name Sandeep, went to collect wood from the forest on the 24th of July when he was bitten by a snake. When he arrived back in his village in the Raisen district of the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, he told his family about the snakebite. Instead of taking Sandeep to a hospital, they brought him to a traditional tantric practitioner in a nearby village. However, the tantric’s treatment proved ineffective and it was assumed the young man had passed away. As some people in India claim that people who die of snakebite should be buried instead of having their body burnt, the villagers were unsure what to do with Sandeep. In the end it was decided that his body was to be taken to the local cemetery where a funeral pyre was prepared. When the fire almost reached the body of Sandeep, the young man started to shout and people realised he was still alive. Again, the young man was taken to the same tantric practitioner instead of a hospital after he gained consciousness. But again his life could not be saved, and the tantric declared Sandeep dead for the second time. He was taken to the district hospital where a post mortem examination took place. In India, many superstitious beliefs and practices still occur at a daily basis especially in rural areas, which might be the reason why Sandeep was taken to a tantric practitioner twice instead of a hospital which might have saved his life.
