Drake Congratulates Kendrick Lamar For DAMN.’s Huge Album Sales
Being the two biggest artists in the game, Drake and Kendrick Lamar are enjoying an exciting rivalry nowadays, especially as they each recently dropped blockbuster projects. Indeed, the media is often quick to pit them — and their very different brands of hip-hop — against one another. Healthy competition doesn’t equate to beef, though. In fact, Drake just congratulated Kendrick for the huge sales earned by his new album, DAMN.
DAMN. made its debut at No. 1 on the Billboard chart last week by selling 603,000 equivalent album units. That number gave him the highest first-week sales of 2017, edging out Drake’s recent “playlist,” More Life, which moved 505,000 units in the week following its March 18 release. As Drake is regarded as the commercial king of hip-hop these days, certain instigative fans thought that he would feel some type of way about Kendrick outselling him.
Apparently, though, Drake was happy to see Kendrick atop the chart. “Amazing to see our music moving!!!” Drake wrote on an Instagram post by Elliott Wilson that shows a screenshot of the reported final tallies for next week’s albums chart (DAMN.‘s second week; More Life‘s sixth).
So if there’s no beef, why haven’t we heard a collab since “Poetic Justice”? Well, according to another screenshot taken from Elliott Wilson’s Instagram, Drake is open to the idea of linking back up with his Compton rival.
Wilson posted a picture of a tweet that asks if there’s a hypothetical lineup that can compete with the one on DJ Khaled’s new single, “I’m the One,” which brought together Justin Bieber, Chance The Rapper, Lil Wayne, and Quavo. A fan commented that a collab between Drake, Kendrick, and J. Cole might take the cake. And, according to XXL, that comment was liked by Drizzy. We know Khaled has already secured the Drake vocals. Is he capable of putting together an anthem of this magnitude?
