Ofcourse, Dunnie didn’t just fly out from the blues. Dunnie is an Abuja-based afro-fusion superstar (a genre which constitutes of, afro, soul, hiphop, rap & blues). She started singing as early as 4 in the church (children) choir, taking solos and lead vocals. On clocking 12, she fell for the drums in the adult choir and married the guitar at 16. She wrote her first song in 2007 and has since then been a regular writer and performer at various entertainment events.
Her first single, ‘E Go Beta’, released in 2012, was at the number one spot on Cool fm Abuja’s Top Ten Countdown for 3 consecutive weeks. Damn!
The 23 year old multi-talented, unsigned female vocalist, songwriter and instrumentalist (guitars, drums) is a current final year Sociology student of University of Abuja.
In the last few weeks, Olamide made two open statements; why he won’t sign a female act and if he dares try to, the female act must be a mix of alternative Nigerian singer, Asa and American femcee, Dej Loaf. This was before Dunnie’s YBNL Mash Up, a response not far from the expectations to silence Olamide’s earlier statements, came alive.
Dunnie’s YBNL Mash Up is well received online, on air, on ground and otherwise from fans, friends and well wishers after her previous covers “Jaiye Jaiye” and “Surulere”, single “My Tomorrow” and the collabo with Mac Roc, “The Way You Are”; as Guarantee Trust Bank recognizes the YBNL Mash Up as their Best New Track of the Week, right upon release. Now, that’s what’s up.
Dunnie’s YBNL Mash Up comprises of melodious mixtures of Olamide’s “Baddo Love”, “Melo Melo”, Adekunle Gold’s “Orente” and “Pick Up”.
“Baddo Love” blows up the minds of the audience, leading the way to the inviting “Orente” just as “Melo Melo” bursts through, before the YBNL Mash Up peaked at the low-tempo “Shakiti Bobo” piano samples with an August visit, thereafter, “Pick Up” graces the entire lively musical performance.
Dunnie’s YBNL Mash Up is a lovely side attraction for valentine’s day. The few lapses in Dunnie’s singing couldn’t stop the YBNL Mash Up from excelling accordingly as an acoustic masterpiece even though I expected the peak of the YBNL Mash Up to have been stable much longer so as to assume absolute love-filled serenity. Regardless, Dunnie was found to have fused every song comprised in the YBNL mashup with creative lyrics, frequent tempo and extremely high vocal strength.
An amazing talent like Dunnie can never be a minus to what Olamide sees as the future state of female acts in YBNL, rather, a blend of her with the YBNL toaster, Adekunle Gold can only determine a withheld vocal-base on the long run for YBNL in the music industry. My optimistic perspective has it that, her real challenges are the likes of Nikki Laoye, Seyi Shay and Tiwa Savage.
