A happy family is hard to come by. Here are tips to ensuring yours is a happy one.

Try and eat together

I know that these days eating together has sort of become like an afterthought. You do not necessarily do it unless you are at a function, a gathering or just something that demands you to be there. But 24?7 hectic schedules, work and school prevents people from sitting together.

Things that you overlook is that, during those times that is when you can actually talk to your children and know what is happening with them, look at people’s moods to see if they are going through something, you can spot the one in a hurry who wants to sneak out or the one who is clearly missing so where are they?  If you don’t eat together, you miss some of these things. When you do not eat together things end up spiraling out of control. By the time you catch some things, you realize that they have gone on for such a long while you can’t do anything.

Have a day set up to spend with each other

I remember growing up and watching movies such as Soul food and they had a particular day that they would all sit together and have fun together. They would spend the whole day prepping and cooking together then eat together. I always thought that was nice. It was nice to be in each other’s business. That way, you can never be shocked when you see stranger’s come to you with news about so and so because you always knew they were up to something or were not right. Even if you cannot find time to eat together, this day is usually important because most of the time you end up having nothing to look forward to when the mundane sets in. This day serves as that for a lot of people; no matter what you are going through you know there is a place you can look forward to that will make you feel happy or relaxed.

Share in whatever they believe in

I have always been of the opinion that separate religions from the father and mother are usually a bad idea. Trust me, I come from a home where the mother is Christian and father is Muslim. The children are Christian but we all go to different churches-or don’t go. Everyone just has their own thing going; so when you are about to say; ‘…but the Quran says or the Bible says’, someone will just tell you, ‘But I do not believe in that.’

It will be hard to settle disagreements amicable. It is hard to reconcile in faith because everyone is praying to whomever they believe in. If you have a faith as a family, make sure that you all follow it together.
