A year graced with fewer hits in recent times had older hits
overgrazing to evergreen and turned some new songs to impurities. The
Top 10 Nigerian Producers 2016 came so late that we had to wait for
more hits to drop before we had decided. Nevertheless, we came through
with distinguished producers who retained their places, few shocking
exclusions and amazing new ones. A 3-man panel consisting of the Oraka
Nnayelu, Ceo of Sulcata Entertainment, Falowo Kayode, Ceo of Musicnobs
and I was formed to evaluate the Top 10 Nigerian Producers 2016.
Criteria for selection were still dependent on number of hit songs
produced by an individual or a production house and their results
between the second half of 2015 and the end of 2016. After an
intensive survey and panel debate, in the order from zero to one,
these Nigerian producers superseded with resulting productions.

E Kelly
Cerious Music in-house producer, E Kelly was responsible for hits like
‘Omo Alhaji’ by YCee, ‘For Example’ by Yung6ix featuring Stonebwoy,
‘Leg Over’ by Mr Eazi, ‘Hale Hale’ and ‘Killing Me’ by Patoranking,
‘Cash Madame’ by Vanessa Mdee.
Maleek Berry
Star Boy’s distinguished producer and singer followed up his dents on
‘Lagos to Kampala’ with a song he produced and recorded, ‘Kontrol’.
Maleek Berry was  behind ‘Want You’ by Yemi Alade, one of the songs
that crowned Yemi Alade at the Mama Awards 2016. Maleek Berry also
produced ‘Generator’ by Mr Eazi featuring Stonebwoy, ‘Get Through
This’ by Mi Casa, ‘Ballerz’ by Wande Coal, ‘Pon Da Floor’ by Shaydee
etc; However, Maleek Berry dropped 2 steps down to number 9 on the
list after a profitable year.
Sarz
Legendary producer, Sarz was on flying colours all year with classy
productions in ‘Asalamalekun’ by Reminisce, ‘This Kind Love’ by
Patoranking featuring Wizkid, ‘Breaking News’ by Dbanj, ‘Coded Tins’
by 2Baba etc; However, his versatility in his hit productions was
highly credible.
Sess
The problem kid producer was aiming high and hitting targets all the
while with different-flavoured beats as seen in Falz’ songs like ‘Soft
Work’, ‘Badh Baddo Baddest’, ‘Soldier’, ‘Foreign’, ‘My Regards To Your
Mumsi’, ‘Clap’ featuring Reminisce, ‘Workaholic’, ‘Celebrity
Girlfriend’, and Terry Apala’s ‘Champagne Shower’. The freelance
producer was the cause of most, if not all nigerian and international
awards, endorsements in the name of Falz the Badh Guy.
Notwithstanding, Sess the problem kid produced all tracks in Falz and
Simi’s ‘Chemistry’ EP and 11 tracks off Falz’s ‘Stories That Touch’
album. However, we expect to hear more productions from Sess
consisting of different Nigerian acts in the songs.
Pheelz
YBNL in-house producer, Pheelz Mr Producer kept his flag high stood firm on his number 6 spot on the list, relishing hits after hits
including ‘Ishe’ by Lil Kesh, ‘Pick Up’ and ‘Ready’ by Adekunle Gold,
‘Abule Sowo’ and ‘Omo Wobe Anthem’ by Olamide. Pheelz also co-produced
‘Ibile’ with Young John and produced 6 tracks out of 16 of Olamide’s
‘Glory’ album.

Altims
A Dj and a latter-day music producer who was originally a rapper was
very notable with his infectious afro and electronic beats as seen in
hit songs including ‘Oluwa Ni’, ‘Standard’ and ‘Problem’ by Reekado
Banks, ‘Do Like That’ by Koredo Bello, etc; The Mavin Records’
producer was in a delivery room all year making stance for his
production team.

Krisbeatz
The new production wonderkid in the industry was responsible for the
hottest hit from Nigeria this year, ‘Pana’ by Tekno, a song he made
the beat in 30 minutes.  Krisbeatz also produced ‘Shele Gan Gan’ by
Lil Kesh, ‘Temper’ by Skales, ‘Bounce’ by Oladips and co-produced
‘Diana’ by Tekno with Selebobo. Krisbeatz’s productions in return
gained Tekno a mark in African music with awards including Mama
Awards, Soundcity MVP Awards, a record deal with Sony Music and more endorsements.

Shizzi
The present day magic fingers continued on his trails, moved up 2
steps to number 3 on the list and made embedding stance with hits not
excluding the street hop ‘Who U Epp’ by Olamide, ‘Gbagbe Oshi’ by
Davido, ‘Kosowo’ by Wande Coal etc. ‘Who U Epp’ became in fill usage
as a street slang all over Nigeria while ‘Gbagbe Oshi’ turned to the
speaker’s favourite across the globe. Shizzi never looked like
relenting in any of his productions as he placed them on higher
stakes.
Young Jonn
YBNL’s essential producer, Young Jonn The Wicked Producer retained his
number 2 spot on the Top 10 Nigerian Music Producers 2016 list with
hits after hits not excluding ‘Konkobility’ by Olamide, ‘Kojo’ by Lil
Kesh,  ‘Orelekewa’ by Dj Jimmy Jatt featuring Davido, ‘Mama’ by Kiss
Daniel, etc; Young Jonn also co-produced ‘Ibile’ by Lil Kesh with
Pheelz.

spot on the list with hits after hits, including ‘Fada Fada’ and Link
Up’ by Phyno, ‘E Pass Go’ by Skuki, ‘Jombo’ and ‘Sin City’ by Kiss
Daniel, ‘Made for You’ by Banky W, ‘Fallen in Love’ by Chidinma,
‘Professor Johnbull’ and ‘Mama’ by Flavour, just to mention but a few.
Phyno won the song of the year category award while Kiss Daniel bagged
awards for best album and hip hop world revelation of the year, at the
Headies 2016.
